Church of England Church
Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, is an Episcopal church built between 1767 and 1773, designed by Colonel James Wren, a descendant of the English architect Sir Christopher Wren.
It was constructed as the main church for the Church of England’s Fairfax Parish and funded in part by George Washington, who was a member and worshipped there regularly. The church is an excellent example of colonial Georgian architecture with its two-story brick design, Flemish bond brickwork, and distinctive Aquia sandstone quoins.
Inside, features like the Palladian chancel window and original panels depicting the Ten Commandments and other religious texts reflect 18th-century English church traditions. Despite its use by Union troops during the Civil War, the church's interior remains largely intact.
It continues to serve as an active place of worship and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance and its ties to America's founding era and notable figures.
