Park and Garden
Cloud Chamber for the Trees and Sky in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a unique outdoor art installation created by British artist Chris Drury in 2003, located in a wooded area of the North Carolina Museum of Art's Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park.
The structure is made of natural materials like stone, wood, and turf, and functions like a giant camera obscura. When the door is closed, a small hole in the roof projects an upside-down image of the trees and sky above onto the smooth white interior walls and floor, offering visitors a peaceful, immersive way to experience nature from a different perspective.
The installation encourages reflection on the connection between humans and the environment and is one of only two such cloud chambers by Drury in the United States, with the roof having been restored in 2021 using locally sourced rot-resistant wood to preserve its integrity.
