Park
Conway Cemetery Historic State Park, located near Walnut Hill in Lafayette County, is the second-smallest state park in Arkansas and serves as the final resting place for James Sevier Conway, the first governor of the state.
Spanning 11.5 acres, the park protects the family cemetery where Governor Conway and his wife, Mary Jane Bradley Conway, are buried alongside more than 40 other members of the Conway and Bradley families. These grounds were once part of the governor's extensive cotton plantation, and the site was established as a state park in the 1980s following a local effort to preserve the historic burial area.
While the park lacks traditional visitor amenities or on-site staff, it features a paved parking area and picnic tables, allowing guests to visit the historic gravesites and learn about the governor's life through an informative biographical marker. Today, the site remains an important piece of Arkansas history, representing the era when the Conway-Johnson political dynasty played a dominant role in the state's early government.
