Diamond Head

Diamond Head, Hawaii, United States

Volcano

Diamond Head, known as Lēʻahi in Hawaiian, is a volcanic tuff cone on the island of Oʻahu that formed about 300,000 to 500,000 years ago during a single explosive eruption as part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series.

This eruption sent ash and fine particles into the air that later cemented into tuff rock, creating the crater visible today, which is roughly 3,500 feet in diameter and rises 760 feet above sea level. The shape of the ridgeline resembles a tuna's dorsal fin, which inspired its Hawaiian name, while British sailors named it Diamond Head after mistaking calcite crystals on the nearby beach for diamonds.

It is located near Waikīkī and is a prominent landmark surrounded by other volcanic features like Koko Head and the Koʻolau Mountain Range. The crater is a result of hydromagmatic explosions where magma interacted with groundwater, and since its formation, erosion has shaped its slopes.

Diamond Head is dormant and monogenic, meaning it resulted from a single eruption and is unlikely to erupt again. It has been designated a National Natural Landmark and remains a popular hiking destination with sweeping views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.
