Park
Eisenhower State Park in Osage County, Kansas, spans 1,785 acres on the north shore of the 6,900-acre Melvern Lake, a flood control reservoir on the Marais des Cygnes River, and was renamed in 1990 to honor President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
It blends 1,000 acres of tallgrass prairie and 440 acres of woodland, offering boating and fishing for crappie, bass, catfish, and walleye via ramps and marinas, a swim beach, hunting in the adjacent 10,000-acre Melvern Wildlife Area for deer, turkey, quail, and waterfowl (except a 1,000-acre refuge), plus equestrian trails like the 22-mile Crooked Knee loop, hiking paths, playgrounds, and horseshoe pits.
Camping includes 163 utility sites with water/electric/sewer hookups, primitive areas, 15 equestrian sites with corrals, four modern cabins, two yurts, and five shower houses, making it family-friendly for year-round recreation near Emporia and Topeka.
