State Park
Farragut State Park in northern Idaho covers about 4,000 acres at the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille and is rich in World War II history, having been home to the Farragut Naval Training Station, the largest naval training facility in the nation during the war.
Established rapidly in 1942 and named after Admiral David Farragut, the base housed up to 55,000 recruits at its peak, providing intensive training for nearly 300,000 sailors before deployment. The park preserves parts of the original base including the Museum at the Brig, which displays artifacts and tells the stories of the thousands of young recruits who passed through.
Today, the park offers a variety of recreational activities such as hiking on 40+ miles of trails, camping in 220 sites or cabins, disc golf, horseback riding, and watersports on the lake. Its diverse landscape features rolling meadows, dense forests, and scenic shorelines, combining outdoor adventure with a unique historic legacy.
The park is also known for its seasonal programs like ranger-led tours and educational events, offering visitors both natural beauty and a glimpse into Idaho’s military past.
