Fort
Fort King George State Historic Site in Darien, Georgia, USA, preserves the oldest remaining English fort on Georgia's coast, built in 1721 as the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in North America.
Constructed under Colonel John “Tuscarora Jack” Barnwell with a cypress blockhouse, barracks, palisaded earthen walls, moat, and other structures along the Altamaha River, it garrisoned His Majesty’s Independent Company of Foot until around 1727, when disease and hardships led to its abandonment after many soldier deaths.
The site has been authentically reconstructed using historical records for public tours, featuring a museum and film on Guale Indians, nearby missions, Scots settlers who later founded Darien, and 19th-century sawmilling that turned the area into a key seaport; it also includes tabby ruins and one of the Southeast's oldest British military cemeteries.
