Historical Place
Fort Larned National Historic Site in Kansas was established in 1859 to protect travelers and commerce along the Santa Fe Trail amidst rising tensions with Native American tribes.
Originally called Camp on Pawnee Fork and later Camp Alert, it was relocated and renamed Fort Larned in 1860. The fort operated as a military post and Indian Agency, helping to maintain peace through treaty negotiations and annuity distributions to tribes like the Southern Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Comanche. The site features nine stone and timber buildings arranged around a parade ground, including barracks, officer quarters, and a hospital, many of which visitors can explore today.
Fort Larned played a significant role during the Indian Wars, serving as a base for military campaigns and protection of mail stages and wagon trains, until it was abandoned in 1878 after railroads reduced the need for the Santa Fe Trail. Its preservation offers a glimpse into 19th-century frontier life and westward expansion.
