Historical Landmark
Fort Mandan State Historic Site near Washburn, North Dakota, marks the location where the Lewis and Clark Expedition built a triangular wooden fort in late 1804 to spend the winter of 1804-1805.
The fort, constructed of cottonwood lumber from nearby riverbanks, provided shelter and safety during brutally cold temperatures with men living in connected huts and storage rooms. The expedition used this time to establish friendly relations with Native American tribes, notably the Mandan and Hidatsa, and prepare for further exploration along the Missouri River.
Though the original fort was destroyed by fire and is believed now to be underwater due to river erosion, a fully furnished, historically accurate replica stands nearby for visitors to experience the setting and learn of the expedition's activities, including meeting Sacagawea and other key figures. The site also offers archaeological insights into earlier prehistoric and historic indigenous use of the area.
