Historical Place Museum
Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in northwestern North Dakota, preserves the reconstructed remains of the most prominent fur trading post on the upper Missouri River, operating from 1828 to 1867 under the American Fur Company.
Built at the request of the Assiniboine people, it became a bustling hub where tribes like the Assiniboine, Crow, Cree, Blackfeet, Hidatsa, and Lakota exchanged tens of thousands of buffalo robes and furs annually for goods such as cloth, guns, blankets, beads, knives, and cookware, fostering a period of peaceful trade and cultural exchange that symbolized U.S. presence on the frontier.
Notable visitors including artists George Catlin and Karl Bodmer, naturalist John James Audubon, and leaders like Sitting Bull documented life there, while the site today features reconstructed walls, bastions, the bourgeois house, trade rooms, and summer living history programs, plus trails and a visitor center for exploring this key chapter in Plains Indian and fur trade history.
