Fort Rock State Natural Area is a striking geological landmark in Lake County, central Oregon, USA, about 45 miles southeast of Bend in the high desert near Christmas Valley.
This massive horseshoe-shaped tuff ring, formed 50,000 to 100,000 years ago by explosive volcanic activity when magma met groundwater, towers up to 325 feet above the flat plain and once stood as an island in prehistoric Fort Rock Lake.
A one-mile loop trail circles the interior past interpretive signs on ancient human history—including 9,000- to 13,000-year-old sandals found in nearby caves—plus picnic tables, restrooms, and parking, offering hikers panoramic views amid sagebrush and other volcanic features.
