Fort Stark State Historic Site occupies 10 acres on Jerry's Point peninsula at the southeastern tip of New Castle Island, New Hampshire, overlooking the Piscataqua River, Little Harbor, and Atlantic Ocean to guard Portsmouth Harbor and the naval shipyard.
First fortified in 1746 as Battery Cumberland with nine 32-pounder cannons, it was rebuilt in 1775 during the Revolution using guns from nearby Fort William and Mary, garrisoned until 1778, and renamed in 1900 for Revolutionary hero John Stark of Bennington fame.
Modernized from the 1870s through World War II with concrete batteries, earthworks, and minefields as part of Coast Defenses of Portsmouth, the site became a state park in 1979 with an unmarked walking trail amid remnants like high walls and gun emplacements, requiring caution for slippery rocks and hazards.
