State Park
Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon's largest state campground spanning 4,300 acres at the mouth of the Columbia River near Warrenton northwest of Astoria, preserves a historic military installation built in 1863-1865 as an earthen fort to defend against British and Confederate threats during the Civil War, named for Union General Isaac I. Stevens and active through World War II until deactivation in 1947.
The only U.S. mainland military base shelled by enemy fire when a Japanese submarine fired 17 rounds on June 21, 1942, it features concrete gun batteries like Russell and Walker with massive disappearing rifles, underground tunnels, a military museum, self-guided tours, and remnants of the original moat and drawbridge amid 15 miles of trails.
Visitors enjoy beachcombing at the iconic 1906 Peter Iredale shipwreck, swimming and boating on Coffenbury Lake, fishing, wildlife viewing, a disc golf course, and nearly 600 campsites in this year-round destination blending history with coastal recreation.
