Gamble Plantation Historic State Park, Florida, United States

Park

Gamble Plantation Historic State Park in Ellenton, Florida, preserves the only surviving antebellum mansion in peninsular Florida, known as the Gamble Mansion, built between 1845 and 1850 by Major Robert Gamble as the heart of his 3,500-acre sugar plantation along the Manatee River, where enslaved laborers exceeding 200 in number constructed tabby structures like the mansion's thick walls and columns, a massive sugar mill—one of the largest in the South—a wharf, cistern, and outbuildings.

Financial woes from sugar market crashes and disasters forced Gamble to sell in 1859, but the site gained fame during the Civil War's end when Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin hid there while fleeing to England, leading the United Daughters of the Confederacy to acquire and donate it in 1925 as the Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial.

Open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset, the park welcomes visitors to tour the restored Greek Revival mansion with period furnishings, explore the 1872 Patten House, sugar mill ruins under ancient oaks, and grounds revealing 19th-century plantation life through guided walks and exhibits.
