George Washington's Mount Vernon

George Washington's Mount Vernon, Virginia, United States

Historical Landmark

George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia was originally established by his father, Augustine Washington, who built a modest house around 1734.

It was later inherited by George's half-brother Lawrence, who named it Mount Vernon after his commanding officer, Admiral Edward Vernon. George Washington began leasing the estate in 1754 and became its sole owner in 1761. He transformed the house across two expansions, particularly in the late 1750s and 1770s, turning it into a grand Masonry-style mansion with 21 rooms and adding distinct architectural elements like a cupola and a two-story piazza overlooking the Potomac River.

Washington also expanded the estate land, which eventually reached nearly 8,000 acres, half cultivated and half wild. After Washington’s death in 1799, the estate passed through the family but gradually declined until the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association purchased and preserved it in 1858, opening it to the public.

Today, Mount Vernon is preserved as a historical landmark featuring the mansion, gardens, outbuildings, and the gravesite of George and Martha Washington, offering insight into the life and legacy of the first president of the United States.
