Golden Gate Bridge, California, United States

Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, is a world-famous suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

Construction began in January 1933 under Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss and was completed in just over four years, opening to the public on May 27, 1937. At the time, it was the longest (4,200 feet main span) and tallest (746 feet towers) suspension bridge in the world. Its distinctive orange-red color, known as International Orange, chosen by architect Irving Morrow, enhances visibility in fog and complements the natural surroundings.

The bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County, carrying vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and has become an iconic symbol of engineering, progress, and the city itself. Its construction was hazardous, claiming 11 workers' lives, though a safety net saved 19 others.
