Governor Wentworth Historic Site

Governor Wentworth Historic Site, New Hampshire, United States

Park

Governor Wentworth Historic Site spans 96 acres in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, preserving the stone ruins and foundation of a grand pre-Revolutionary mansion built around 1774 by John Wentworth, the colony's last Royal Governor.

Once spanning thousands of acres as a lavish summer retreat possibly the largest house in New England, the estate burned down in 1820, leaving behind an original well, plaque, and artifacts uncovered through archaeological digs that reveal daily life of the privileged colonial class.

Acquired by the state in 1934 and listed on the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2007, the undeveloped site offers year-round access for quiet walks, picnicking, and reflection on early American history amid peaceful woods.
