Governor's Palace

Governor's Palace, Virginia, United States

Historical Landmark

The Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was the official residence of the royal governors of the Colony of Virginia and later housed Virginia's first two elected governors, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson.

Constructed between 1706 and 1722, it was an elaborate brick building designed to symbolize British authority, featuring ornate gardens, terraces, and about twenty support buildings. The palace was a center of colonial government and social life, with a ballroom added in the 1750s that hosted elite gatherings. During the American Revolution, it briefly served as a hospital for wounded soldiers.

The original palace was destroyed by fire in 1781 after the Virginia capital moved to Richmond in 1780 for security reasons. In the 1930s, the palace was meticulously rebuilt on its original foundations, based on archaeological finds, historical plans, drawings by Jefferson, and an engraving known as the Bodleian Plate.

Today, the reconstruction stands as a key historical landmark within Colonial Williamsburg, showcasing period furnishings and gardens to give visitors insight into 18th-century colonial governance and life.
