Monument
Halekiʻi-Pihana Heiau State Monument is a 10-acre historic site on a high ridge near the ʻĪao Stream mouth in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, USA, preserving the ruins of two ancient luakini heiau war temples linked to powerful Hawaiian chiefs.
Pihana, meaning "gathering place," started as a small temple around 1260-1400 AD and expanded into a royal residence for Chief Kiʻihewa, while Halekiʻi, or "image house," was added nearby by Chief Kihapiʻilani, both vastly enlarged between 1662-1705 and rededicated for warfare by Maui's last ruling chief Kahekili.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, it offers views over the fertile Nā Wai ʻEhā region irrigated by four streams, with free daily access during daylight hours for cultural reflection amid stacked basalt stone terraces.
