Historical Place Museum
Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home in Vermont, was built in 1905 by Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.
Situated on a hill overlooking the Battenkill River valley, the estate served as a summer retreat and family home for three generations of Lincolns. The Georgian Revival mansion is furnished with Lincoln family pieces and contains artifacts related to Robert Lincoln and his famous parents.
After the last Lincoln descendant residing there passed away in 1975, the property was at risk of being sold to developers until local community members formed the nonprofit Friends of Hildene to preserve it as a memorial to the Lincoln family. Today, Hildene operates as a museum with beautiful gardens, walking trails, a restored 1903 Pullman railroad car once owned by Robert Lincoln, and a working goat dairy farm.
Visitors can explore the history of the Lincoln family, enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valley, and learn about Robert Lincoln's legacy in business and conservation. The estate offers a rich blend of history, nature, and cultural heritage connected to one of America's most iconic families.
