Hollywood Sign

Hollywood Sign, California, United States

Historical Landmark

The Hollywood Sign, perched on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, was originally erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a real estate development called "Hollywoodland."

It consisted of 13 tall white letters, illuminated by around 4,000 light bulbs that flashed in segments to spell out the name. Although meant to last only about 18 months, it quickly became an iconic symbol of the burgeoning movie industry and the city itself. Over time, the "LAND" portion was removed, and the sign evolved from a promotional billboard into a global emblem of ambition, dreams, and the glamour of Hollywood.

The sign fell into disrepair by the late 1970s, but fundraising efforts involving celebrities helped rebuild and preserve it. Today, the Hollywood Sign stands as a beloved landmark synonymous with Los Angeles's entertainment culture and the hopes it represents for countless people worldwide.
