Park
Lake of Three Fires State Park spans 1,155 acres in Taylor County near Bedford, southwest Iowa, USA, centered on an 85-acre lake created in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps damming tributaries of the One Hundred and Two River.
Named for Potawatomi Native Americans known as the "Fire Nation" who used three hilltop signal fires for tribal gatherings overlooking the future lake valley, it became a New Deal project for jobs and recreation during the Great Depression.
A hotspot for equestrians with 10 miles of multi-use trails, horse camping, and pens, it also offers boating, fishing for bluegill, crappie, bass, bullhead, and catfish from jetties and ramps, swimming beach, modern/non-electric campsites, cabins, picnicking, and year-round quiet escapes amid oak-hickory woods.
