Laura Plantation, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Vacherie, Louisiana, is a significant historic site known for its well-preserved early 19th-century Creole-style raised big house and several original outbuildings, including slave cabins.
Formerly called Duparc Plantation, it provides an important window into Louisiana's unique Creole culture, blending European, African, and Native American influences. The plantation includes a U-shaped main house built in 1804-1805 with characteristic architectural features such as a raised brick basement, wide galleries, and briquette-entre-poteaux (brick between posts) walls, offering resilience against the local climate.
On the grounds are preserved slave cabins that reveal the harsh realities of enslaved life, highlighting the experiences of 186 enslaved workers by the Civil War. Over the years, Laura Plantation has been carefully restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it serves as a museum and cultural attraction that educates visitors about Creole history, architecture, and the lives of both the wealthy owners and the enslaved people who lived and labored there.
