Park
Laura S. Walker State Park spans 626 acres near Waycross and Hoboken in southeast Georgia, USA, near the Okefenokee Swamp's northern edge and named for Laura S. Walker, the only living person ever honored with a U.S. national park (1937) for her conservation, forestry advocacy, and civic leadership.
Built by Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration workers on distressed farmland, it opened as Georgia's 13th state park in 1941 and features a 120-acre lake for fishing, boating, skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming at a sand beach with rentals available.
Visitors spot exotic Okefenokee wildlife like alligators, gopher tortoises, pitcher plants, herons, owls, and warblers along nature trails and the lake edge, plus enjoy an 18-hole Lakes Golf Course, 44 campsites, six cottages, picnic shelters, and biking paths amid pine flatwoods.
