Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden near Richmond, Virginia, originated from a vision by Grace Arents, who in the early 1900s transformed her family’s property, including the abandoned Lakeside Wheel Club founded by her uncle Lewis Ginter, into a lush garden retreat called Bloemendaal.
After Grace Arents’ death in 1926, the property was eventually willed to the City of Richmond with the request it be developed into a botanical garden honoring Lewis Ginter. The garden was officially established in 1984 by a community-minded coalition of botanists and horticulturists who restored and expanded the property, now encompassing 82 acres with 15 themed outdoor gardens, a conservatory, a greenhouse, and various educational facilities.
The garden is widely known for its beautiful landscapes, diverse plant collections, and its role as a community hub for education, recreation, and conservation, symbolizing the legacy of both Ginter and Arents in promoting nature and gardening in the region.
