Park
Marks' Mills Battleground State Park is a 6.2-acre historic site in Cleveland County, Arkansas, that preserves a portion of the battlefield from the American Civil War's 1864 Red River Campaign.
Established in 1961, the park commemorates the Battle of Marks' Mills, which took place on April 25, 1864, when Confederate forces successfully ambushed and defeated a Union supply column traveling between Camden and Pine Bluff.
This decisive Confederate victory resulted in the capture of 2,000 Union troops and over 200 supply wagons, ultimately forcing the Union army to abandon its campaign and retreat to Little Rock. The site is named for John H. Marks, who built a sawmill and flour mill there in 1834, which remained operating landmarks during the conflict.
As part of the Camden Expedition Sites National Historic Landmark district, the park offers visitors access to interpretive exhibits and a quiet picnic area where they can reflect on this pivotal moment in Arkansas history.
