Mausoleum
Mauna ʻAla, the Royal Mausoleum State Monument in Honolulu's Nuʻuanu Valley, serves as the sacred final resting place for nearly all of Hawaii's monarchs from the Kamehameha and Kalākaua dynasties, plus their families and retainers.
Built in 1865 as a Gothic Revival coral structure designed by Theodore Heuck to house kings like Kamehameha IV after the original ʻIolani Palace crypt filled, it features an underground vault, a chapel with Queen Liliʻuokalani-designed stained glass, koa wood interiors, and symbolic golden pūloʻuloʻu kapu sticks marking sacred boundaries.
Open weekdays 8am-4:30pm with no entrance fee, this 2.75-acre National Register site adjacent to Oʻahu Cemetery preserves Hawaiian royal legacy through guided tours, historic trees, and a curator's cottage, where remains were ceremonially moved by torchlight in 1865.
