The imposing three-story wood-frame house with hip roof, widow's walk, and fine interiors overlooks Portsmouth Harbor, featuring original furnishings, Whipple's sword, and a 1776 horse chestnut tree planted with Philadelphia seeds symbolizing independence.
Preserved since 1912 by the National Society of Colonial Dames in New Hampshire after five generations of family ownership, it now operates as a museum interpreting colonial life, slavery's legacy, and Portsmouth history through guided tours and Colonial Revival gardens designed by Alexander Hamilton Ladd.
