Tourist Attraction
Monument Rocks in Kansas, also known as the Chalk Pyramids, are large chalk formations located in Gove County, standing up to 70 feet tall and rich in fossils.
These formations were created about 80 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period when the area was covered by the Western Interior Seaway, a vast inland sea. The deposits, made primarily of chalk, were formed from sediment settling on the sea floor and later exposed by erosion, resulting in dramatic buttes and arches.
Monument Rocks was the first landmark in Kansas to be designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1968 and is considered one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. Historically, the formation helped guide settlers along the Smoky Hill Trail in the 1860s and remains a striking natural attraction known for its geological and paleontological significance.
