Historical Landmark
Mo'okini Heiau is an ancient Hawaiian temple and National Historic Landmark within Kohala Historical Sites State Monument at Hawaiʻi Island's northern tip near ʻUpolu Point, USA, dating back potentially 1,500 years to around AD 480 when high priest Kuamoʻo Moʻokini first built it.
Legend holds that 18,000 menehune (mythical little people) constructed the massive 270-by-140-foot luakini heiau in one night by passing water-worn basalt stones hand-to-hand from Pololū Valley 14 miles away, later expanded by Tahitian priest Paʻao between the 11th-14th centuries who introduced human sacrifice, 30-foot walls, and the rigid kapu system.
A sacred living spiritual site managed by Moʻokini descendants with free daytime access via a rough 4WD road and short walk, it features brooding stone platforms, an altar, phallic rock, and holehole stone for processing sacrificial victims, near King Kamehameha the Great's birthplace—its stark isolation evokes profound ancient power.
