State Park
Mounds State Park in Anderson, Indiana, is a site rich in prehistoric Native American heritage, featuring ten ceremonial earthworks built by the Adena and Hopewell cultures around 160 B.C. to 50 A.D.
These mounds served ceremonial, celebratory, and astronomical purposes, tracking the seasons and celestial events with alignments to stars, planets, and the moon. The largest mound, the Great Mound, is nearly a quarter-mile in circumference and the best preserved.
Originally part of an amusement park in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the site was protected by the Bronnenberg family and eventually became a state park. It offers several hiking trails, camping, canoeing on the White River, and a nature center, blending cultural history with outdoor recreation.
The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains a vital link to Indiana’s indigenous past.
