Museum
The Museum of Osteology, known as SKELETONS: Museum of Osteology in Oklahoma City at 10301 S. Sunnylane Road, is a private natural history museum dedicated to the study of bones and skeletons, displaying over 450 real specimens from around the world representing all five vertebrate classes including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, with a total collection exceeding 7,000 ethically sourced items from over 1,800 species.
Founded by Jay Villemarette of Skulls Unlimited International after over 40 years of collecting starting in 1972, the museum opened to the public on October 1, 2010, in a facility next to the company's processing site where dermestid beetles clean specimens for articulation and exhibit. Exhibits cover topics like locomotion, adaptation, forensic osteology, and pathology with highlights such as massive whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling, interactive Explorer's Corner for hands-on bone handling, scavenger hunts for kids, and special events like Forensic Night, making it an engaging, educational stop open daily with affordable tickets around $13 for adults.
