My Old Kentucky Home Museum

My Old Kentucky Home Museum, Kentucky, United States

Historical Place Museum

My Old Kentucky Home Museum, located in Bardstown, Kentucky, is centered around Federal Hill, a historic 19th-century mansion built between 1812 and 1818 by Judge John Rowan.

The mansion was the inspiration for Stephen Foster’s famous song "My Old Kentucky Home," which was later adopted as Kentucky’s state song. Originally a plantation, the estate tells the complex story of 19th-century life including the legacy of slavery, with about 85% of the furniture on display having belonged to the Rowan family.

The site became Kentucky’s first state park in 1923, and today offers guided tours where costumed interpreters share the history of the family, the house, and the enslaved people who lived there. Alongside the mansion, the museum features beautifully landscaped grounds, a family burial site, and various seasonal events including a well-known musical performance called "The Stephen Foster Story."

The museum provides a rich and touching blend of cultural history, architectural heritage, and musical legacy in a peaceful and evocative setting.
