The Nemours Estate in Wilmington, Delaware, is a grand 200-acre country estate featuring a 77-room French neoclassical mansion designed in the Louis XVI style and extensive formal French gardens inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles.
Built in 1909–10 by industrialist Alfred I. du Pont as a gift for his second wife, Alicia, the estate is named after the French town of Nemours, linked to du Pont’s ancestry. The mansion's nearly 47,000 square feet house rare 18th-century French furniture, notable antiques, artworks, and remarkable clocks including one built for Marie Antoinette. The surrounding gardens include fountains, pavilions, a reflecting pool, and sculptures, such as the Temple of Love and a colonnade memorial.
The estate also includes a Chauffeur’s Garage with a collection of vintage automobiles. After a $39 million renovation completed in 2008, the mansion and gardens were restored with expert craftsmanship to preserve their historic elegance.
Visitors can tour the mansion and grounds through self-guided or guided options, enjoying the intimate atmosphere and learning about the Du Pont family history. Nemours Estate is considered one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture and French-style gardens in the U.S., drawing visitors for its beauty, history, and cultural significance.
