Nicodemus National Historic Site

Nicodemus National Historic Site, Kansas, United States

Historical Place

Nicodemus National Historic Site in Kansas preserves the only remaining town west of the Mississippi River that was established by African Americans during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War.

Founded in 1877 by formerly enslaved African Americans from Kentucky and led by figures such as Reverend W.H. Smith, the town was created as a place for Black settlers to build a self-governed community and to pursue freedom and opportunity on the Great Plains.

Nicodemus symbolizes the resilience and pioneer spirit of Black Americans who left the South to escape racial oppression and sought a new life in the "Promised Land" of Kansas, known for its abolitionist history and role in the Underground Railroad. The site includes historic buildings like churches, a hotel, a schoolhouse, and a township hall, which reflect the town's vibrant cultural and social life.

Despite early hardships, Nicodemus flourished, becoming a center of Black homesteading and culture, and remains inhabited by descendants of the original settlers. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and a National Historic Site in 1996, Nicodemus continues to honor the legacy and history of African American migration and settlement in the West.
