Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States

Locality

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was established in 1942 as a secret city by the U.S. government to support the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to develop the atomic bomb.

Located on rural farmland, Oak Ridge quickly grew from a small area to a bustling community housing about 75,000 people by 1945, many of whom were involved in uranium enrichment and plutonium production at facilities like K-25, Y-12, and X-10.

The city was planned by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill featuring prefabricated homes, schools, shopping centers, and other amenities designed to create a self-sufficient community despite wartime shortages and strict security measures. Known as the "Secret City," much of its purpose and activities were classified, and workers had limited knowledge about the project.

Today, Oak Ridge is recognized both for its crucial role in nuclear history and ongoing scientific research, including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and parts of the city are part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
