State Park
Parkin Archeological State Park in northeast Arkansas preserves and interprets a Mississippian Native American village that existed approximately from AD 1000 to 1550.
This 17-acre site, believed to be the historical village of Casqui visited by Hernando de Soto in 1541, features a large earthen mound, remnants of house structures, and evidence of a wooden palisade and moat that once fortified the settlement.
The site was strategically located at the confluence of the St. Francis and Tyronza rivers, controlling river travel and trade despite the less fertile soil. Archaeological findings include artifacts from the time of European contact, supporting the notion that this village had early interaction with Spanish explorers.
The park offers educational tours, programs, and ongoing research, making it a significant location for understanding prehistoric Native American culture in Arkansas and early European-Native relations in North America.
