State Park
Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas is the state's first state park, established in 1923 and celebrated for its scenic beauty and rich history.
The park is named after a legend of a young French woman who disguised herself as a cabin boy to follow her fiancé to the New World and was buried on the mountain after falling ill. The park features rugged landscapes with unusual geological formations, such as Turtle Rocks, Rock House Cave with ancient Native American pictographs, Bear Cave, and the stunning Cedar Falls waterfall.
The Civilian Conservation Corps developed much of the park's infrastructure in the 1930s, including stone lodges, roads, trails, and dams, many of which remain in use and are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Petit Jean also holds historical significance as part of the Trail of Tears, with Cherokee and other Southeastern tribes passing through the area during their forced migration in the 1830s.
The park offers around twenty miles of hiking trails and panoramic overlooks, making it a blend of natural wonder and cultural heritage.
