Park
Poison Springs Battleground State Park covers 85 acres west of Camden in Ouachita County, Arkansas, commemorating the April 18, 1864, Civil War Battle of Poison Spring—a Confederate ambush during the Camden Expedition of the Red River Campaign.
Union forces escorting supply wagons from Camden lost nearly 300 men, including a devastating massacre of over 100 soldiers from the First Kansas Colored Infantry, while Confederates suffered fewer than 20 deaths in the victory that preserved vital supplies.
Established by state legislation in 1961 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the day-use park features interpretive exhibits, picnic areas, a shaded half-mile trail through pine-oak-dogwood forests, and Highway 76 tracing the original battle road amid wildlife-rich bottomlands.
