It sits at an elevation of 6,547 feet and stretches about 4.5 miles long and 0.72 miles wide, with a maximum depth of 387 feet. The lake is named after the sockeye salmon that once returned from the Pacific Ocean in such large numbers that the lake appeared red during spawning season. The area around the lake offers numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, and camping, supported by amenities including campgrounds, cabins, picnic sites, swimming beaches, and a visitor center.
