Built in 1835 by Daniel and Martha Turnbull, it was constructed with the labor of enslaved people and became one of the largest and wealthiest plantations in the South. The plantation is renowned for its extensive formal gardens, meticulously restored using Martha Turnbull’s garden diaries to replicate the original 19th-century landscape featuring fountains, statuary, and a variety of plants including camellias. The main house remains furnished with many original pieces imported from Europe and the North, preserving the lifestyle of Louisiana’s plantation elite.
After the Civil War, the plantation transitioned from enslaved labor to sharecropping. Purchased by the state in 2000, Rosedown is now a National Historic Landmark with tours and educational programs that explore the complex history of plantation life, including the contributions and hardships of the enslaved community. The site provides a rich historical, cultural, and horticultural experience, highlighting southern heritage through architecture, gardens, and preserved artifacts.
