Roseland Cottage, Connecticut, United States

Local History Museum

Roseland Cottage, also known as the Henry C. Bowen House, is a well-preserved Gothic Revival summer home built in 1846 in Woodstock, Connecticut.

It was constructed by Henry and Lucy Bowen as a seasonal retreat and features a distinctive coral-pink exterior, original Gothic furnishings, and embossed Lincrusta Walton wall decorations inside. The estate includes a formal parterre garden with over 4,000 annual flowers, an icehouse, garden house, carriage barn, and the nation’s oldest surviving indoor bowling alley. Four U.S. presidents visited the cottage, and the Bowen family lived there until 1965 before it was given to Historic New England.

Today, it serves as a museum offering guided tours that showcase Victorian-era life, architecture, and horticulture, reflecting the lifestyle of a prosperous 19th-century American family.
