National Forest

Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho covers over 2.1 million acres across Idaho and a small part of Utah, featuring diverse landscapes including the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, as well as the Albion, Black Pine, Boise, Boulder, and other mountain ranges.

The forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and includes the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, which was established in 1972 to protect scenic, historic, and wildlife values. The terrain ranges from sagebrush steppe and alpine tundra to dense spruce-fir forests, with over 1,100 lakes and 3,500 miles of rivers and streams that provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife such as elk, mountain goats, wolves, and eagles. Visitors can engage in outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, mountain climbing, and skiing.

The forest also contains significant wilderness areas where development and motorized equipment are prohibited to preserve the natural environment. Its history traces back to a 1905 designation by President Theodore Roosevelt and it continues to balance ecological preservation with recreational use and forest management.
