Beach
Schooner Gulch State Beach, three miles south of Point Arena on California’s Mendocino Coast, is a scenic stretch of rocky headlands, sandy coves, and tidepools where Schooner Gulch Creek meets the Pacific and driftwood often accumulates along the shore.
The park protects over 50 acres of cliffs and beach, including the nearby “Bowling Ball Beach” formation of round sandstone concretions that appear at very low tides, and offers fishing, surfing, beachcombing, tidepooling, whale‑watching during migration season, and picnicking from a small highway‑side parking area with short trails to the shore.
The area lies within historical Central Pomo territory and later supported timber and small‑scale farming communities before state acquisition; services are limited, weather can be changeable, and visitors should follow posted rules (dogs on leash, no drones) and check tide and access information before exploring.
