The Star Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore, Maryland, was the home and workshop of Mary Young Pickersgill, the flagmaker who, in 1813, sewed the large 30 by 42-foot American flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the British attack in the War of 1812.
This flag, enduring a 25-hour bombardment in 1814, inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the U.S. national anthem. The house was built in 1793 and became a hub for Mary’s flag-making business, where she worked with family members and assistants to create the flag that became a symbol of American resilience. After Mary’s death in 1857, the house changed hands and was used for various purposes before being preserved as a museum in 1929 by the City of Baltimore.
It features original Federal-period furnishings, exhibits about the War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore, and tells the story of the flag and its maker, maintaining its status as a National Historic Landmark and a key patriotic site in American history.
