Park
Staunton River Battlefield State Park is a 300-acre Civil War historic site straddling Charlotte and Halifax Counties in Virginia, USA, near Randolph, preserving the site of the June 23, 1864, Battle of Staunton River Bridge where about 938 Confederate reserves—old men, young boys, and home guards—successfully repelled 5,000 Union cavalry led by Generals Wilson and Kautz aiming to burn the vital railroad bridge supplying General Lee's besieged army at Petersburg.
Key features include preserved Confederate earthworks at Fort Hill with its bomb-proof magazine, a 600-foot iron bridge replica of the original wooden structure, walking trails through the battlefield and wetlands, a visitor center with exhibits, and ranger programs highlighting the outnumbered defenders' victory that delayed the Union raid.
Open year-round, it offers picnicking, fishing, birdwatching in expansive wetlands, and ties to over 3,000 years of Native American and colonial history along the Staunton River.
