Rail Museum
Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, preserves the history of steam railroading in America from roughly 1850 to 1950.
Situated on about 40 acres formerly used as the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad yard, the site features a large collection of restored steam locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars, along with essential railroad facilities like a working turntable and roundhouse. The collection originated with F. Nelson Blount, who began preserving steam engines in the 1950s and 1960s before they were relocated to Scranton in the 1980s.
As part of the National Park Service since 1995, Steamtown offers visitors interactive exhibits, historical displays, and seasonal train rides that highlight the technological and cultural impact of steam railroads on American industry and transportation. The site also honors the workers—engineers, conductors, and mechanics—whose labor helped build the nation’s growth during the Industrial Age.
