Museum
The Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut, is the only museum managed exclusively by the U.S. Navy that focuses on the history of submarines, often called the “Silent Service.”
Established in 1955 by the Electric Boat Company and donated to the Navy in 1964, the museum is located beside the Naval Submarine Base New London. It houses more than 33,000 artifacts, 20,000 documents, and 30,000 photographs covering over 200 years of submarine history, from the Revolutionary War’s first combat submarine, the Turtle, to the modern nuclear-powered USS Nautilus, which is the museum’s centerpiece.
The museum features exhibits like the World War II submarine control room, submarine models, historic torpedoes, and the sail section of the USS George Washington. It also offers a research library with thousands of volumes and unique artifacts, making it a key repository for submarine heritage and an educational destination for those interested in naval history.
