The Ohio State Reformatory, also known as Mansfield Reformatory, is a historic prison in Mansfield, Ohio, built between 1886 and 1910 in a castle-like Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque, and Queen Anne style to rehabilitate young, first-time offenders, featuring the world's largest freestanding steel cell block at six tiers high.
It operated until 1990 when a federal court ordered its closure due to overcrowding and poor conditions that led to inmate deaths, fires, and violence after hardened criminals from a 1930 Columbus prison fire were relocated there. Saved from demolition by the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society in 1995, it now serves as a museum with self-guided and guided tours, paranormal investigations, and film locations for movies like The Shawshank Redemption and Air Force One, attracting over 120,000 visitors yearly to explore its haunting history and restored areas like the warden's quarters.
