Central Government Office
The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, was built during World War II to consolidate the offices of the War Department, which were previously spread across 17 different buildings in Washington, D.C.
Construction started on September 11, 1941, and was completed remarkably quickly by January 15, 1943, with the building designed to house about 40,000 employees. The building was designed by architect George Bergstrom and overseen by General Brehon Somervell, who pushed to complete it rapidly due to wartime needs.
Originally planned for a different site, the Pentagon's location was moved near Washington National Airport to avoid obstructing views from Arlington National Cemetery, but it retained its distinct five-sided shape. It covers about 6.5 million square feet and features miles of corridors, serving as the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and symbolizing American military strength and coordination.
